Designing Checkout for a 23-Billion-a-Month UPI Market

UPI is the default

NPCI data shows UPI handled 23.66 billion transactions worth about ₹29.88 lakh crore in July 2026, a monthly record. An RBI report put UPI's share of India's digital payments at 83% in 2024, up from 34% in 2019.

For Indian consumers, paying by UPI is the expected path, not an alternative option.

What good UPI checkout looks like

On mobile, use the intent flow so the customer's own UPI app opens with the amount filled in. On desktop, show a QR code and poll for status rather than asking for a VPA. Show a clear pending state and never ask customers to pay twice because a webhook was slow.

For subscriptions and EMIs, UPI AutoPay mandates reduce failed renewals compared with manual reminders.

Behind the button

Reliable payments need idempotent order creation, webhook retries, and a reconciliation job that matches every settlement to an order. These are invisible to customers until they are missing.

With volumes still growing about 20% a year, the businesses that win through 2030 will be those whose payment systems are boringly reliable at peak.
