India's EV Transition Is a Software Opportunity

EV sales reached 2.55 million in FY2025-26, about 8.5% of registrations, and NITI Aayog has set out a path to 30% by 2030. Chargers, fleets and batteries all run on software.

India's EV Transition Is a Software Opportunity

Where the market is

India registered 2.55 million EV sales in FY2025-26, up about 25%, according to the India Energy Storage Alliance. JMK Research, using Vahan data, puts EV penetration at about 8.5% of new registrations, with electric two-wheelers making up most of the volume.

NITI Aayog's August 2025 report lays out a roadmap to 30% EV sales by 2030, with particular attention to electric buses and trucks, which are still a small share today.

The software layer

Every charger needs management software, usually over the open OCPP protocol. Every EV fleet needs telematics for range, charging schedules and battery health. Every operator needs payments, tariffs and uptime monitoring.

These are classic software problems: integrations, real-time data and reliable billing, not hardware.

Outlook to 2030

If the 30% path holds, the number of chargers, connected vehicles and fleet operators will multiply this decade. The bottleneck will be operations: keeping chargers online and fleets charged at the lowest cost.

Operators who invest early in good software will run more assets per person. That is where the margins will be.
